The simple truth to eating healthy

I see people struggle every single day with the concept of healthy eating or dieting. Let's get one thing straight; if you are eating healthy, you don't need to diet. In fact, there is no reason to diet at all if you drop the unhealthy habits and stick to what's good for you. No one is saying that you need to never indulge, never let that donut pass your lips or that chocolate candy melt in your mouth. No one is taking away all that is good in the world. It is truly and honestly, incredibly simple.
Stop making it complicated for yourself. You don't have to have goji berries, milled flax, Hemp protein powder or acai. Stick to what you know. Otherwise, you are only going to stress the crap out of yourself and get angry and give up. This isn't a diet, it's change and it's meant to be implemented permanently. Make it yours, customize it, make lists, cut out magazine recipe photos, make a pinterest board! Inspire yourself.
Begin by getting yourself jazzed up about being healthier. Plop yourself in front of the tube and head over to Netflix. Add some inspirational, health focused documentaries to your que and lounge, watch, repeat. Watch until you feel that giddy, school girl feeling in yout tummy. That's change trying to come out. Now, don't go crazy. Grab some paper and pen and write down some of your favorite healthy foods and be realistic about what's healthy. Chips that are trans fat free aren't "healthy".
What are your favorite nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits and veggies? What are your favorite snacks, like dried fruit or trail mixes? Write these down so you have a real idea of what is healthy that you WILL absolutely not let go to waste. Create a grocery list. Start small. Do not go and buy $150 in produce first thing because it will start to go bad before you get to it and you will feel this change is silly and too difficult.
I have staples I always grab; apples, I use them in smoothies as snacks and i pack them in my Hubby's lunches. They are popular. Bananas, for all the same reasons. Frozen fruit is a great snack to satiate a sweet tooth, can be used in baked breads, dinners like stir fry with mango or pineapple and in smoothies. Roamine lettuce is great for tearing up into salad bowls and creating a big beautiful, green salal, they are also great for wraps, stuff them with rice and beans, mango and vegan chikin or whatever you like! Nut milks are for cereal, smoothies and drinking for calcium and D. You get the idea, multi use items are not only cost effective but will help you get more servings of these healthier items each day.
Set up. Have your cutting board and counter space cleared. Have everything cleaned and organized so you are walking into a fresh start and space. Plan on doing green smoothies ? Have your blender set up and ready to go! Get a "naughty" cabinet. This is a small cupboard or pantry filled with "healthiER" snacks like kettle chips, popcorn, and any minimally processed, packaged foods. Set this up in a far corner. Also, don't FILL it with stuff, just so you have snacks on hand that aren't AS bad, when you ahve cravings.
Small tip: my Hubby keeps a big bar of dark chocolate in the freezer, he is a sugar fanatic and says it really helps cut his cravings. He gets the natural brands with no milk and little sugar and only a few ingredients. Frozen mango is also our fav to munch on for a sweet tooth.
Fast food. Fruit and veggies are the original fast food. You grab 'em and you eat it. You can carry it all day and it doesn't go bad. You don't have to feel guilty eating it or giving it to others. It nourishes your body. Does your fast food do any of those things?
There is honestly no need to get all frantic and buy a million cookbooks, bookmark every "healthy" recipe online, buy a bunch of cookware etc. Just keep it simple, in time all that other stuff will fall into place. Right now you need to worry about kicking your cravings and stocking your fridge and cabinets with better choices. Simple. Simple.Simple. The easiest and best explanantion I can offer for eating healthy is did it grow outside? If the answer is yes then by all means have at it ( though I am sure there are exceptions here, i don't mean farm animals and I don't mean anything poisonous). There's a saying, "if you aren't apple hungry, you aren't hungry". It is true and I have even found myself in this situation a few times. I craved something but was not hungry.
My aunt had a good tip the other day, she said to someone "try eating a peice of fruit or veggie before every meal or snack". This way you are filling up a little to see if you are truly hungry. And whatever is about to enter your body, if you arent making a healthy meal decision, then atleast there is less room for the junk in your trunk.
Take a deep breath, inspire yourself, be good to yourself and put good fuel in your body.

5 Lying Labels, Label Lies and other
“health food” shenanigans

I was always bothered by the labels “diet”, “low-fat”, “no fat”. If we really
are truly in search of food labeled with these words, then we want better
health, right? That’s not really the way. If something is labeled with health
claims, it’s because it isn’t really great for you and needs a reason to pull
you into purchasing it. If there is a cupcake cereal on the shelf, would you be
more likely to grab it if it said “cupcakes in every bite!”, or “whole
grain”, “low-fat”, “7g fiber per serving”? That’s the point, it’s not good for
you at all, but there are SLIGHT healthy benefits and they highlight those to
mask the truth behind the bite.
Lactose Free? Not
necessarily. Check the label. There aren’t super strict rules about this still,
well, strict enough in my opinion. Stever Carper of SteverCarper.com writes:
“Deceptive packaging? Not at all, let me hastily say. Despite what I quoted
above, many states have their own set of rules. And state rules on milk
supersede general federal regulations. (Yes, the milk lobby is a marvelous
thing.) Anyway, the state rules realistically admit that getting every last bit
of lactose out of milk is a difficult proposition, so they allow up to that half
a percent of lactose in “Lactose Free” milk. There’s nothing inherently shady
about this. In fact, the feds do something almost exactly equivalent. In the
NLEA, “free” was usually defined in bureaucratic terms as “a trivial amount.”
“Fat Free” foods can really have up to half a gram of fat a serving; “Calorie
Free” foods up to 5 Calories, and so on. (Although remember that a food that
claims to be “lactose free” must actually be lactose free.)
So “Lactose Free” milk can have up to a maximum of 60 milligrams left in a
glass of 100% lactose reduced milk. That’s not much. It’s about equivalent to
the lactose in one gram of milk. Let me explain how small that is. If you’re
baking and you need a tablespoon of milk, the film that sticks to the spoon
after you’ve poured out the milk is probably more than one gram. You will never
notice that it’s there unless you’re the one in a million with no lactase at all
or who must rigorously avoid all lactose because of other medical
conditions.”
The reason I felt this was worth writing about was because I almost bought
it. Me. I am very careful about what I put into my body, but the everyday person
is not. They are trying to fool you and that’s just cruel. They don’t have to
have your diarrhea, or raunchy farts for three days.
Trans fat-free? Maybe. Make
SURE it doesn’t say 0 g trans fat PER SERVING. ugh. Trans fat is
horrific, it does awful things inside the body and you don’t want it in there,
don’t be fooled by the claim of 0g per serving. Make sure it says 0 trans
fat. period. Trans fat contributes to clogged arteries. Read more about this
awful little sneaky ingredient here: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/trans-fats-science-and-risks
No added Growth
hormones?
Yes, technically they aren’t allowed to use hormones in pigs, chickens,
turkey, etc. BUT, they can use antibiotics which react in the same way and
therefore, they are lying to you, trying to deceive you although you are trying
so hard to read labels and be healthy, they’ve done it again! If you eat animal
meats, try Local/Organic please and avoid being scammed and robbed of your
health. Also, you support better farming practices!
Grass fed?
Unfortunately, Grass fed is a term that is now regulated by
the USDA. They say that it means the animal consumed a 100% grass diet and ate
no corn, soy or anything un-natural and was free to roam about a pasture of
rolling green fields. The USDA allows anyone to use the term. Providing the
farmer submits paperwork saying that they let them run in the grass and they
only feed them grass, they buy it and let them label it “grass-fed”, no checking
up on them, no nothing. They even slap it on meat like chicken and pork, and
those animals can’t even live off grass!
Whole Grain? The FDA has
never set a rule about this one. So basically, MOST “whole grain” products you
see, are just a variety of refined grains chocked into your food. Not all
companies do this, in fact some are truly whole grain. Read the label, make sure
it says “whole” before the name of the grain, and make sure it’s not just
corn.

Detox For Dummies

First, why are you detoxing? Weight loss, to balance out from previous
medications or antibiotics, to begin a healthy lifestyle? Whatever the reason,
you need to know a few things before you start:
1) Cleansing can be scary.
You may use the bathroom a lot, and it may or may not be pretty. Wait. It will
ALWAYS not be pretty, but it will sometimes scare you at what comes out. No need
to fret at loose stools or frequent BR breaks, it’s all part of the process.
However, if you feel terrified and things aren’t at all normal and you see blood
or are dehydrated you need to see your doctor. I am not trying to scare you, but
venturing into new healthy ways means doing some spring cleaning of your colon
and skin. The side effects can be less than desirable at first. I always
recommend doing a gentle detox, to cleanse the system slowly a little everyday
so that the side effects are not as harsh or scary. It may take longer, but it
is certainly worth it.
2) The skin needs to be detoxed as well!
3) If you lose weight and do not start changing your eating habits for the better once
your detox is over, well, you will gain it right back!
4) If you are
diabetic or in very poor or fragile health you need to check with a doctor or
naturopath before starting all this
5) Be sure you are financially and
mentally as well as emotionally prepared to do this, and that the people around
you are supportive or at least won’t try lead you astray.
NOW that we have all of that out of the way, let’s get on it!
First thing when you wake up, drink a glass of water. Filtered water. Good
water. FIRST THING! Then as you get moving, grab some warm water (filtered) with
lemon, add honey if you must (make sure it’s raw).
Bentonite clay is great for absorbing toxins, you can usually get this at the
health food store, the reason I enjoy this is because it’s also amazing as a mud
mask on the skin or in the bath to draw out more toxins. It’s great for acne and
large pores and oily skin. Be sure to get the right kind as ask for assistance
at the store before eating clay! You want the food grade kind!
Dandelion tea is great to sip on throughout the day, it is extremely detoxing
and cleansing for skin and body.
My favorite gentle detox routine is to use bentonite clay all over from head
to toe mixed with water, let it dry and soak up all of the toxins. Run a really
warm, almost hot bath with Epsom salts, and sip detoxing tea while in the tub. I
also burn candles and have very soothing music playing.
This may be too much
for you right now, maybe just the tea with a warm bath is right for you right
now. Also bear in mind you will sweat, so keep water on hand so that you don’t
get dizzy.
Eating clean, unprocessed foods and limiting sugars will also help speed the
process of detox along much faster. If you keep dumping toxins into the body you
won’t fully detox, so plan on changing things up when you begin your
detox/cleanse.
Best of luck to you, and remember to listen to your body and
be gentle with yourself!
A wonderful GENTLE detoxing herb is Milk Thistle. Be sure to pick up a good reputable brand like Zebra Organics Milk Thistle, non- GMO, Vegetarian and GF!

Change is in the air..
Change is hard, uncomfortable and no fun!
I know change is hard. I regularly chat with people
about their diets, lifestyle choices and how difficult it is.
I want to make it as easy-peasy as possible.
Here are a few tips and tricks to help you make some
changes for the better, today:
Eat MORE fat.
Wait, what? Yes. More. There are healthy
fats found in avocados, nuts and seeds that the body metabolizes differently
than unhealthy fats. Fat is CRUCIAL to helping your metabolism function
properly, keep your hair and skin nourished, and keep your brain and mind
healthy too. TRUST me when I say this. Big-girl genes run in my family and
I weigh 120. I eat a lot of avocados, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats. So, in conclusion, being afraid that (healthy) fats will make you fat, is not only untrue, it's depriving you of tasty eats and healthy snack options!
ex:
Avocado and olive oil on salad, two healthy fats right there! or sprinkle on
some sunflower seeds, or nuts!
Replacing sour cream/ice cream/dressings
Use a lot of sour cream for "taco
night"? Use a lot in your baking? Natural Greek yogurt tastes VERY
close, and has some beneficial properties to it, and a lot less (bad) fats! Try
this easy replacement!
for instance, you can replace cream, mayo or cream cheese in a lot of cases
too!
Also, use it for dips, pasta or creamy based potato and pasta salads,
homemade frozen yogurt ice-creams or you can add it to hot meals. Apparently it
withstands higher heat cooking without curdling too!

Eat before you run!
Eating breakfast is SUPER important.
Have a whole grain like oatmeal, whole-grain English muffin, whole grain toast
and be sure to add a protein like yogurt or tofu scramble. Add some
Healthy fats like almond butter, nuts, flaxseeds and a fruit or veggie
grapefruit, berries, banana, etc.
Ex: oatmeal topped with berries or
bananas, toast with nut butter and bananas on top, yogurt with berries and
fruits, English muffin topped with fruit spread and nut butter, whole grain
cereal topped with fruit, tofu or egg scramble filled with veggies
Once in awhile to give your body a break from saturated fats, try having a
vegetarian night for dinner, you can add some faux meat products. My favorite is
faux- ground meats, once mixed with the seasonings etc., no one can tell the
difference! You can eliminate a lot of fat, calories and stress on your body by
trying this every so often.
ex: faux ground beef or turkey for chili or taco night. Homemade veggie
burgers are great on the grill too!
Organic Sunshine Burgers are great for us who want Gluten-free and Vegetarian options.
