Can you suggest a natural-based hair color that gives really good coverage for salt and pepper graying hair? I recently lost hair due to illness; however, I have some fragile new growth and want to stay away from the brand I use.
Thanks!

Mamma S!
Great question. Have you ever tried Henna hair color? You can get natural grey coverage, boost shine and color while maintaining strength and elasticity! Amazing stuff eh?
Henna comes from a plant native to India. The real version of henna is red, it will only give you red hair. Most companies will mix the henna with indigo powder and/or cassia leaf powder. This way it remains natural and will give a much broader range of colors to choose from. I love deep, rich, chocolate browns so I choose a dark brown or sable henna shade.
Just be sure to check the label! Some commercial, pre-mixed hennas will have scary additives like heavy metals. The only thing you want to see on the list is powders from leaves like the cassia and indigo – no waxes, filler or junk.
I personally use the Rainbow henna. On their site they explain their history and that they’re cruelty free “You can count on Rainbow for safe, gentle cruelty-free formulas using Organic & Natural ingredients & extracts, colloidal oatmeal and naturally derived fragrances.” Phew!
Henna smells very, er, natural. Yes, natural. It has a smokey, herb scent. I actually love it! Some people think it smells like mud or something but i think it smells very earthy.
Tip: If you mix in some apple cider vinegar and some dark roast freshly brewed coffee, you’ll get a deep rich color and grey coverage boosting properties! Plus you smell like an earthy cafe!
I am confident that this will be a great addition to your routine and give you a color and shine boost, strength and coverage that you’re looking for.
Stay golden, or Brown or red, or black.
