Pastela: keeping bright hair, BRIGHT, longer!

4/21/2015

Picture
Pastela was created out of need. I wanted to dye my hair crazy-cool colors but I knew how incredibly expensive it was to deal with the upkeep. The dye, the bleaching, the specialty shampoos, the ruined towels and pillowcases. The list goes on. Not to mention all of the bathroom sink and tub scrubbing. Toned arms and awesome hair. But again, it's pricey and it breaks my heart to see color rinsing down the drain.

I knew that dry shampoo was helpful. Even with my super oily scalp, dry shampoos lessened the clumpy, greasy hair look. But every single one of them, even my DIY ones, left a white powdery look that took forever to work into my hair. I also have curly hair that I don't like to brush through a lot, so brushing it through wasn't going to happen.

One day it just came to me. If my dry shampoo matched my hair- I wouldn't have to work it in so much. I could also use it last minute in the AM. So I created a test batch. Sure enough it worked and not only did it give some volume and soak up some oil, but it made my hair look thicker! I have fair skin and dark hair, my scalp shows through my hair and makes it look so thin! The colored powder helped to conceal my roots and scalp areas a little and give the illusion for some thickness.

As a licensed stylist, beauty blogger, Youtuber and makeup geek, I love creating products for myself and now I want to share them with everyone else! I really hope you all enjoy what I have created and aren't afraid to reach out to me with anything you need. Don't forget! I am vegan and wouldn't use anything that hurts our furry friends. All of my upcoming and future products will remain cruelty free and vegan.

Ask Amarie: Cruelty free, healthy haircolor?

9/20/2014

Dear Amarie,

Can you suggest a natural-based hair color that gives really good coverage for salt and pepper graying hair? I recently lost hair due to illness; however, I have some fragile new growth and want to stay away from the brand I use.

Thanks!
Mamma S

Mamma S!

Great question. Have you ever tried Henna hair color? You can get natural grey coverage, boost shine and color while maintaining strength and elasticity! Amazing stuff eh?

Henna comes from a plant native to India. The real version of henna is red, it will only give you red hair. Most companies will mix the henna with indigo powder and/or cassia leaf powder. This way it remains natural and will give a much broader range of colors to choose from. I love deep, rich, chocolate browns so I choose  a dark brown or sable henna shade.
Just be sure to check the label! Some commercial, pre-mixed hennas will have scary additives like heavy metals. The only thing you want to see on the list is powders from leaves like the cassia and indigo – no waxes, filler or junk.

I personally use the Rainbow henna. On their site they explain their history and that they’re cruelty free  “You can count on Rainbow for safe, gentle cruelty-free formulas using Organic & Natural ingredients & extracts, colloidal oatmeal and naturally derived fragrances.” Phew!

Henna smells very, er, natural. Yes, natural. It has a smokey, herb scent. I actually love it! Some people think it smells like mud or something but i think it smells very earthy.
Tip: If you mix in some apple cider vinegar and some dark roast freshly brewed coffee, you’ll get a deep rich color and grey coverage boosting properties! Plus you smell like an earthy cafe!

I am confident that this will be a great addition to your routine and give you a color and shine boost, strength and coverage that you’re looking for.

Stay golden, or Brown or red, or black.

Snow Storm blues: beautiful and bored makeup ft. Firestarter Cosmetics

2/3/2014

Picture
So this year, we have been hit with a lot of powdery white to keep us indoors for far too long. I miss the sun. I decided to break out my newly ordered Firestarter Cosmetics goodies from Black Friday. I used "manda's room" to create an all around, super chill, effect. The color was so beautiful and really made me think of Winter and how blues just go so easily with anything this time of year. This color actually, on it's own, would be a great Spring color. So, it's  a good, inexpensive investment for almost all year color choices.

Seriously though, it was $1.75. Vegan and cruelty free. Yes please.

I just applied primer to my lids and patted a shimmery white on the inner corner area, then used a dense brush to pack on the "manda's room" in the outer corners. I softly blended the edges with a fluffy, clean brush. Falsies would have really made this look, but, I was stuck indoors without any.

To play it up a little more, just for fun, I added a small bit of the color to my lip balm and it added a very cool toned effect. Really neat. I had a lot of fun doing this look!

Tag me and send me YOUR looks with your fav Vegan cosmetics!

Nourish Organic Products! Lavender~Mint Collection

1/4/2014

Nourish Organic Skincare Review: Organic food for Healthy Skin

This line not only has super-cute packaging with little pictures of figs and lavender flowers, it’s based out of my family’s teeny tiny hometown in Pennsylvania. Cool? Hopefully I can visit the factory where they make all these beautiful, and great smelling beauty items one day. I received the Lavender/Mint handsoap, which is not only silky and doesn’t dry your hands out, but is naturally antibacterial, free of harmful ingredients and smells AAAAAAAmazing! I literally wash my hands MORE often because I know I will smell amazing each time I do.  Free of sulfates? Yes please. Sulfate soaps make my hands so dry and hurt, this doesn’t do that to me (also doesn’t contain any sulfates) so glad to have found my hand soap soul-mate!

I also got ahold of the Lavender/Mint Body Butter. O.M.G. The smell is the same as the handsoap, amazing, clean and pure. The benefits of the butter far exceed the soap , however. It is deeply moisturizing, and easily melts with warmth from the skin. It can easily melt in the jar, so be sure to keep it stored in a dry and cool place. I find that natural products last longer and don’t spoil as fast in the refrigerator, much like food! Not rocket science here!

They're VEGAN!

Some of the ingredients they use, just to name a few commonly found in their products are as follows:

Acai berry( antioxidant rich, anti-aging),

Aloe (hydrating, healing),

Coconut (deeply hydrating,anti-aging, anti microbial),

Green tea (antioxidant rich, redness reducing)

HOW TO: Natural Henna at home for luscious VOLUME and shine!

While some of the Rainbow Research products are Vegetarian, they are all cruelty-free. The Henna I am using contains only the plant dyes for the hair.

Their website also states : "Rainbow Research was founded in 1976. Our philosophy is simple - use the best natural ingredients available, avoid unnecessary chemicals, and tell the truth. Since the beginning, we have chosen not to test our products on animals."

Happenin' Hair♥ Curly or WAvY Locks STYLE w/out heat!!!

11/17/2013

Picture
Curly haired folks tend to have tangle issues, dryness and absolute frustration with their hair.
I have been there. Those days just happen sometimes.
However, when we stay on top of our game and deep condition, detangle gently, comb out and don't touch so much, we do just fine.

A lot of people are under the impression that curly hair is effortless, you wake up and it's just this amazingly perfectly sculpted, spiraled art. Nope. Most of us have to cry through combing each day, heck I have had days where I am like "forget it", I am too unnerved to take one more hurtful tangle. So I throw it into a braid or bun.

I recently received some shampoo bars from a wonderful couple who runs a small business called Mystic Water Soap.

While visiting my mother I visited their booth at a farmer's market in Maryland. They were very knowledgeable and super nice!

Needless to say I grabbed some things and love them all. I was sent the shampoo bars and I am mostly in LOVE with the argan oil one. It has olive oil, shea, lavender, rosemary, orange peel, argan oil and it smells great and moisturizes my hair really well.
I also did what the owner had recommended which was to restore your hair PH by rinsing with vinegar. I did this on the midway to ends and it was much easier to detangle. I have been a fan of vinegar rinses for quite sometime.

SO. Onto that styling!

After shampooing (even the ends! the argan oil helps keep it soft), I used a vinegar rinse (3 tbsp. acv in 1/2 c water) and rinsed with cold water.

I carefully combed out my hair with a wooden bristled brush. (apply your favorite gel or mousse  here if you wish).

I then took section and twisted them, then around my finger. After that I scrunched them up toward my scalp and gently let them down.

You will start to look like you have dreads sort of. Do your best not to touch them at all. Let your hair air dry, you may also pin them up . After they are COMPLETELY dry turn your head upside down, again you may apply mousse, gel or a natural hairspray. I did not use any products here just the shampoo bar and my hands!

After turning upside down, finer comb or wide-tooth comb out your locks. SOFT right?! OMG I am in love♥

I am always very careful about my foundation purchases online.
Is that the
right color? Is this computer screen showing me the actual color? It’s a trying
process. I have tried quite a few different companies and so far this one is way
up there.
I ordered the LIGHT sampler for the Mineral
Foundation
. What I received was freakin' AMAZINGLY flawless coverage!
Most mineral foundations make you look too dry or are cakey or just don’t have
great color output and coverage. This had it all! I am getting oiler since the
weather is getting warmer so I am hoping it holds up, but if it doesn’t I know
they have a matte foundation that I could layer underneath. Too perfect
right?
I also had a chance to try some mineral cheek color in Desert Rose.
What a color, it’s gorgeous, pinky plumy tones and went with almost any eye
shadows I used throughout the week. It’s a very versatile color and I only use a
tiny bit since I am so fair, a lot goes a long way. This would also be GORGEOUS
on a deep skin tone. It has a tiny hint of glow to it, which makes you look
healthier.

The Oatmeal Honey Breakfast bar went fast, I used it on my
face and body everyday. Smells so good and natural. Most things break me
out. Guess what? no breakout. Just good clean fun

I also tried the oil control humectant. I LOVE the smell,
it’s so light and of course, not artificial at all. I believe it’s the ylang-ylang and Myrrh I smelled, so lovely. I used this everyday for a week, as I
didn’t notice much difference in oil control since it was cooler then and I
wasn’t very oily, I did notice it made my skin dewy and so glowy and fresh
looking. I used a tiny bit with my mineral foundation and got a make shift
tinted moisturizer! It helped to keep the tinted moisturizer on longer since
most of those slide off my oily skin easily. I will be testing out the oil
control of this one through the harsher summer days and I will be sure to update
you.
Overall, this was a great experience and I am very pleased with the
company as well as the products I tried.
Below are some of their newest
updates, be sure to visit their website as well

Berry~Natural whole face look with ONE product ft. Monave`

9/10/2013

Picture
All natural cosmetics is the healthy choice and the right one . Here I simply
applied my Monave` foundation, left my skin slightly dewy so I could easily glide
the pigment onto my skin. I grabbed my lipstick #54, it’s a lovely deep brown berry shade. I warmed it up with my finger and patted it into the outer corners of my lids as well as
slightly into the crease. I then blended it upward with a clean finger to give a Smokey eye effect. Subtle yes, but the red tones make it stand out very well.

I then dotted three spots along my cheekbone and blended this upward toward
my temple with my clean fingers.

I then applied my lipstick as usual and was sure to blot so it wasn’t too
dark for the daytime.

what a simple time saving technique!

My mother actually used to use Burt’s Bees lip tints on her cheeks, I thought she was crazy, I told her “Mom, uh, duh, that’s why they have BLUSH.” I knew everything because I was a teenager.

I actually realized after I did this little review using one product, that I wasn’t the actual genius behind the time saving makeup trick! Thanks mom ♥

Smokey Purples and Precious Pinks ft. MONAVE`

9/9/2013

Picture
Here I simply used my oil controlling humectant (which is FAB btw and smells
amazing, I love the smell!) You only need a TINY bit, which is also just as
FAB.

I used my oil-control foundation which has held up very well in this
frizz-causing heat wave we’re having.yuck!

I contoured and bronzed with my Mineral Bronzer in #310 (nice light shade for
us fair skinned people).

I then used my adorable hot pink blush (tiny bit goes a looooong way) in
#218, LOVE this it’s so versatile!

Next I highlighted the bridge of my nose and cheekbones using their Face Illuminator in RD. I also mixed a small but into my lipgloss for a highlighted lip!

I patted the color #70 (actually a mineral blush) onto my lids and slightly
into the crease. This color is a beautiful shimmery pink with bronzey and golden
hues. SO LOVELY. I would definitely compare it to NARS “orgasm” but definitely
better for your skin and the animals.

I then grabbed my little pot of this lovely, dark- lavender hued shadow
pigment in V V. I blended this lightly into the crease and slightly under to the
bottom lashline.

I, of course, finished by applying my cream to powder in Black along the
lashline.
